Odd text from a wrong number? It's probably a scam

If you don't recognize the number, delete. I'm seeing these more and more. Many faking they're from a business I do business with, but many like the one below. Just delete.

Odd text from a wrong number? It's probably a scam

The text message came late Tuesday. Like others I’d been getting recently, it wasn’t an obvious scam from the outset — no promise of a warranty or that I’d won a prize, no link to a suspicious website — but instead it seemed to be a frantic message intended for someone else.

It’s the kind of text message that has become common for just about anyone with a smartphone.

“Una, good evening, tomorrow morning the contract time of 10am is shifted to 3pm for signing, I don’t feel well, I need to go to the hospital tomorrow morning to see the doctor”

I responded that it was the wrong number. Of course, it didn’t end there. The person on the other end, “Anna,” struck up a conversation.

Within a few minutes, she was offering to help me invest in cryptocurrency....

I got a text from "one of my credit card banks" and did not click the link to find out about a suspicious charge. I checked my bank from my computer and my saved link and called customer service from the # on the back of my card. It was phishing. So I cut and pasted the text and mailed it to the bank's fraud department.

I get them from bank. Amazon, even crypto account. Something about an unusual charge or a new login or an account locked, along with an obviously odd link.

If concerned, I'll go to that account and check, but more and more I just delete.

Ditto. I get 3-4 per week. Delete, delete, delete.

I absolutely delete all "wrong number" texts and I do get them. I won't engage.

As someone that has been a victim of identity fraud 3 times, I always check fast but not by responding. I always call the bank and get the appropriate security department.

The banks make fraud so easy and then they complain about it. Luckily they all were cooperative and sent me letters to document the events. I had one person even register their car to my home. I started with the DMV who actually has special investigators, but of course I had to freeze my credit and have my title monitored.

These people really make life difficult for you and then they just pass your info on.

For some reason on my phone, the delete text option doesn't appear, but for those at least I can mute them.
