Based on the pre-invasion disposition of Russian forces, Russia could not take all of Ukraine unless they just gave up. I don't know what was in Putin's mind, but I do know how to interpret the satellite data and see the number /position of troops and the lack of strategic level logistics hubs.

Much like when the British invaded New Orleans, the Russians brought administrators to run the country. They intended to take over the country.
Any time you give a man something he doesn't earn, you cheapen him. Our kids earn what they get, and that includes respect. -- Woody Hayes
From everything we've seen in the lead-up to the war--it was, and still is.
Putin's gambit concerned the Donbas and Crimea--both regions with more citizens who are loyal to Russia than to Ukraine. Both regions that had declared their independence from Ukraine in 2014.
We're not talking about a sweet, innocent little Ukraine here. We're talking about a corrupt murderous country that dammed up the fresh water supply to Crimea and was slaughtering citizens in the Donbas. Those citizens were constantly appealing to Putin to do something, and he finally did, after repeatedly approaching the World Court about the situation and being turned down.
There's no evidence whatsoever that Putin wants Poland. What he does likely want--and what I want--is for us to butt out of the situation. We have enough problems at home--we don't need to be sending American money into corrupt Ukraine. It's completely senseless. Those who are still beating the drum of the Red Scare are locked in a past that no longer exists.
