Post New Mexico republicans upset about Convention Center Statues :Breaking Bad

I have never watched Breaking Bad but have been aware of the show. So apparently a convention center in NM has memorialized two of the show's drug dealing characters
Some officials are pissed about the message and I sure citizens are lining up with a 95 % Confidence rating (LOL) in one of two completely opposed camps
For me I just have questions
    1) How were the statues funded? Public money?
    2) If not it's none ya
    3) If so then why expensive statues at all?
    4) Would there be a similar controversy if the statues commemorated a real or fictional Tobacco or Booze executive? Like the Barbarians at Gate story of Ross Johnson played by James Garner??

I suppose they did that, because, the series was filmed in New Mexico and, brought a lot of revenue to the state.

It's not about glorifying drug dealers, it's about recognizing the contributions of the actors.

This very issue was brought up a while ago. It’s noteworthy that several cities have erected a statue to famous entertainers who were also junkies who died through suicide or a heroin overdose.

What seems odd here is that these characters are fictional.

The statues were commissioned and paid for by Sony Pictures Television. And as Abby suggested, I think they represent a tribute to the actors, not the fictional characters they portrayed. For those who never watched the show, they never white-washed or glamorized the drug trade or the lives of those who participate in it. A lot of people, some of them innocent of any wrongdoing, died in the course of the show's five seasons. Just as in the follow-up prequel series, 'Better Call Saul', which ended yesterday, the piper does get paid in some way in 'Breaking Bad' when it's all said and done.

As someone who watched the show right when it started and later became a huge success I can see how these fictional characters have been immortalized in the minds of many viewers. Who can forget when actor Brian Cranston attended the insanely popular Comic Con in San Diego and walked around in a Walter White mask unknown to the people and fans around him.

That said I think statues of TV characters good or bad are a bit much, but it is something to help the tourist industry I expect. Just keep in perspective the show was about the violence surround the drug trade and the broken lives of the people involved.

I would also question whether a Convention Center is appropriate?

Republicans aren't the only ones upset about this.

The state is going to $#@! under its current leadership. You had better not walk around Albuquerque unless you are armed and if you have a nice car, make sure you install an engine kill switch in it or it probably won't be where you parked it when you get back.

Since they stupidly made recreational Marijuana legal, even though it is still illegal under federal law, there are pot shops and tattoo parlors on almost every corner in just about every town. Couple that wit a law that makes abortion legal right up to the moment of birth and you end up with a state that used to be best know for its amazing scenery and colorful history, is now known for Meth, Marijuana, and Abortion .

The state motto of New Mexico is officially "Crescit eundo", which is really pretty stupid as it is, but the new unofficial motto of the state is "Come to New Mexico. Get high and kill your kid".

The idea of putting up statues to commemorate a couple of Meth dealers actually doesn't sit well with a lot of New Mexicans, regardless of political party.

Where is the line for statues? We've seen so many fall the past 3 years. I don't pretend to know the answer.
