Question Streaming services are surpassing cable networks for the first time...

Streaming services are surpassing cable networks for the first time...

This summer has been a breakthrough for streaming, with the time viewers spent watching services like Netflix and Hulu outpacing broadcast and cable television networks in July for the first month ever.

Viewers spent 35% of their time with streamers, 34% on cable networks and 22% watching broadcast television last month, the Nielsen company said Thursday. Video on demand or DVD playback accounted for much of the other time. July
is an unusual month — broadcast TV is essentially on vacation with little live sports or scripted programming and a prime-time schedule clogged with game shows — but it’s a clear indication of how rapidly the business is changing.

“It was inevitable,” said David Bianculli, professor of television studies at Rowan University and critic on NPR’s “Fresh Air.” “I knew it had to happen, but I didn’t know it would happen as quickly as it did.” Streaming’s audience share in July was up 23% compared to July 2021, Nielsen said. Broadcast television’s share was down 10% and cable down 9%.

Considering what cable companies charge for a list of 250+ channels, most of which are not watched, this doesn't surprise me in the least. More and more people are 'cutting the cord/cable' and streaming what they actually want to watch rather than the absurd.

In the work flop house, I have over-the-air TV, but hope to soon watch a little bit of my favorite shows on my tablet. I read a lot, but a streamer or two wouldn't be a bad idea every now and then. At home, it's DirecTV, which is as bad as the cable companies. 250 channels for $145 a month, of which 240 are garbage.

But my cable internet costs as much as my cable Internet and cable TV cost 10 years ago. They I have to pay another $90 for Direct TV streaming TV to get the networks.

Now the streaming services seem to be going a la carte. I'm trying to figure out how many $5 individual services do I need to get rid of AT&T/Direct TV and how long before they start doubling their prices?

The cable promise = cheap + no ads + channels you could not get on live TV

Reality = Expensive + You pay and get more commercials + 100s of channels you never wanted.

I priced out the cost when i moved into my new home last year and no, streaming services and people who claim to be cord cutters but truely are not, really do not save that much these days not to mention having a much lesser service. The Youtube or hulu live services are both over $65.00 a month for a basic service and their add on packages much like xfinity can ballon the price well over a hundred a month. So what sense does it make to use a service at best with 85 channels that will cost me 65.99 a month, then will have to still acquire internet service from my cable provider and get a lesser deal because it will only be internet service. This does not go on to include streaming services like disney or netflix.

A true cord cutter is a person who pays 0 dollars per month and uses an over the air antenna imo!

But you need internet. Since the cord it talked about as more than just a physical wire, then you are going to pay for something. I am too far from the TV station antennas to get reliable signals.
Before they screwed us with Al Gore's led digital signal switch from analog, we had reliable and good signals. Another ridiculous one size fits all solution that made things worse for many.

Supposedly, there is a new Internet/Cable company building in our area, which is supposedly going to be building up through our back roads. It's through our electric system, with federal grants for rural areas. Supposedly (I'm using a lot of those in this post) we should be built to the county road by the end of the year, which we were also told last year, about the end of last year.

Those who already have it say it's relatively inexpensive, decent service and decent customer service. We have a special situation, though. We are about a 1/3 of a mile from the county road. We will have to trench from the county road to our house, and lay the cable, or pay someone to do it. We do have a bobcat with a trencher, and at least one of the two neighbors that share the gravel road from the county road in are willing to contribute to the cost of us doing it, and then pay us for trenching and laying the cable to their house.

By the time it's all said and done, here's hoping there is actually something worthwhile to watch.

Streaming is the Future of Television obviously. Hopefully competition keeps the costs down?

Our local Spectrum hardly advertises cable service any longer, most Internet and Cell Phone services.
