This reminds of my old man (RIP)

I manufactured tooling for them. Amsted is still one of my biggest customers in North America.

But they followed National Rail and Columbus Castings down to Mexico for the undercarriages and couplers.

The workers in Alliance worked hard and made good product. It just seemed to be corporate wanting to consolidate the plants.

I would have been regularly visiting the Alliance plant mostly between 1985 - 1995.

In the end it cannot survive. It will have all the same costs that it previously had and probably more, because the family ownership probably did without pay some weeks. So nothing changed except that the new entity has more debt.

Their purchasing situation does not change because they are only buying for one store. To survive they need to be part of a large chain with much better purchasing power.

If the family owners could not increase prices then the city cannot raise prices.

The old owners/workers had incentive to make things work and did multiple jobs.
That is unlikely to happen with people that have no economic interest.
It is not there job. They ring up the groceries. You have to hire someone else to do the ordering and accounting.
When was the last time you saw a public employee busting their butt?

How do they think they are really going to make this break even?

As of this date I am googling this place and the market appears to be listed on google maps as 'permanently closed'

The Dollar General discussed in the article happened to be right across the street.

There is a Walmart Supercenter 10 miles to the south of Erie and there is another supermarket 5 miles away in another town in St Paul, KS.

Many of these stores, the reason they close is because the residents vote their dollars elsewhere, but they still have fond memories of these stores.
