Music preference is such a personal thing. Personally, I can't stand rap, which I'm glad to see isn't even in that chart, jazz, or country. I especially don't like country because it seems to appeal to the lowest level of mentality and intellect. I like some classical, but it looks as though many don't care for it.

Guess I'll just keep my singing to myself.

Thank you, it sounded to me like it was a regular thing. And sure an occasional smattering of regular radio music is not a bad thing. On the other hand it still seems a bit like pandering

I expect that if you are studying music, your education should also include contemporary forms, which would include hip hop, as one of the most recent.

There is an interesting history behind it.

They run the number for every year by genre. This is for 2021.

But everyone listens to rock. Young and old. Black or white. Even though I was a Dead Head and leaned more toward Folk, Bluegrass style; if I am driving down the street and Van Halen, Rainbow, Tom Petty, ZZ Top, CCR, Cream, Black Sabbath... comes on, then the volume is going up and I don't care who stares.

    That's...completely awesome!!

I mean last I checked, no hard rock song had cracked the top 10 on the billboard charts in 13 years...which just seems completely bizarre to me. I mean when I was in elementary school, Nirvana was everywhere and when I was in high school, KoRn was everywhere. That's just how it was, and I mean it wasn't unheard of by any means for their songs to rank in #1 or 2, I mean. It's so weird to me that hard rock is no longer a major music genre. But now I know the truth: it's actually not that hard rock isn't popular, it's that there's not much *new* hard rock that's popular. It's a retro thing now, and retro is always cool.

Me? I've long been partial to punk rock, grunge, and alternative country (a.k.a. roots rock), though I also enjoy my share of plain heavy metal and electronic dance music as well (particularly if electric guitars are involved). You won't be surprised to learn that, within that, the riot grrl sub-genre is disproportionately represented on my playlists and in my tape collection. I never get tired of Bikini Kill, Heavens to Betsy, GRLwood, Babes in Toyland, Nirvana (duh), classic Metallica, the Youngins, Destroy Boys, Skating Polly, Sonic Youth, X-Ray Spex, Chuck Ragan and the Camaraderie, or good ol' Ozzy Osbourne, to name a few of my favorite groups. I also really like a good number of video game soundtracks. A winner is me!

Umm...hate to spoil the moment for ya, but you do realize that hip-hop is the formal term for rap, right?

You should say classic Ozzy too. He hasn't put out a good album since I was 11 (1986).

I try to keep an open mind on all musical forms. Some I appreciate more than others, but I think there is something you can find to learn from or enjoy in any genre. I think you're selling country short here. Country has simple chord structures, but what they do within those chords on an instrumental level is quite interesting. Check out bluegrass, for instance. In fact, some of our best instrumentalists have come from country. I've never quite understood why they put so much focus on the singer.

Odd how Ozzie and Black Sabbath continue to be rock fan favorites while the critics continuously put him/them down.
