I disagree. I think NATO parties would be best. Ideally the U.S., but the UK or Germany could work as well. This isn't about Russia trusting the third party. This is about putting pressure on Ukraine to come to a reasonable settlement. As Ukraine's first and foremost supplier of weapons and other financing, the U.S. is in the best position to leverage that power over Ukraine. Up until now, the U.S. and the U.K. have been doing the opposite, encouraging them to -not- work on a negotiated settlement. Had it not been for their efforts to thwart a peace settlement in favour of "weakening Russia", this whole war might have been over months ago.

As I said above the only two parties that can start negotiations now is Ukraine and Russia.

Regarding the OP, if NATO extends into Ukraine, or if a NATO like organization does, Russia has made its position clear. What does NATO do?

For those who like short youtube videos, Lee Camp did one based on the article above here:

The problem with the above is that the April window of opportunity has passed and Russia has moved into a much more intractable position, particularly vis-a-vis NATO. They are now drawing a major line in the sand. Between protracting this war and all of the sanctions that the west has been piling on, Russia is bleeding money and they are not prepared to let the west continue to erode their economy or make them look weak. This is the proverbial last straw. They can't afford to fight this ground war indefinitely because sanctions have eroded their financial reserves. Their only other choice is to resort to massive destruction in order to end the bleeding. Let's also not forget Russian pride. If Putin simply caves, he will be seen as weak kneed by his people. Machismo and refusal to be cowed is a feature of Russian identity. Think of WWII and how the Russian people lived on weeds, rather than surrender to the Nazis. Back them into a corner and they would rather die with honor than surrender and if they have to turn the Ukraine into smoldering rubble, so be it.

This NATO proxy war is no longer supportable and only a respected ally with some leverage with Russia could get them to the table at this point. Russia's attitude to NATO nations and especially the US at this point is that the whole lot can F off and die. If Russia goes down, they are prepared to take as many as possible with them.
In quoting my post, you affirm and agree that you have not been goaded, provoked, emotionally manipulated or otherwise coerced into responding.

IMO that the Donbas region is forfeit and they will want assurances, metaphorically signed in blood, that Ukraine is off limits to NATO.

Add in the region south of Donbas and north of Crimea- unless Ukraine can take it by military force.

"Prologue To Third World War": Kremlin Reacts To Security Guarantees For Ukraine | ZeroHedge

Ukraine wants a 'NATO-esque' bloc which can be called upon to immediately defend borders with Russia, which was proposed by a working group established by President Volodymyr Zelensky. Crucially it would include the United States and other NATO allies providing Ukraine with "security guarantees". Kiev officials stressed in unveiling the plan Tuesday that it's not meant as a replacement for NATO, but as a legally binding alliance to be in place while Ukraine eventually pursues full NATO membership, as Newsweek describes of the proposal:

The Kyiv Security Compact (KSC)—proposed by Andriy Yermak, the head of Zelensky's office, and former NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen—would also establish a "multi-decade" plan of investment, military training, and intelligence sharing to bolster Ukraine's defensive capabilities as the country pursues full NATO membership.

The Kremlin's reaction has been swift and fierce, with Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia Dmitry Medvedev warning that it is "really a prologue to the Third World War" if it gets enacted. He described that nuclear holocaust would be the end result.

According to a translation of Medvedev's reaction in state media, which had been posted in a statement to Telegram, he blamed "dull idiots" from "stupid think tanks" for concocting such a "hysterical appeal". Medvedev wrote:

"And then the Western nations will not be able to sit in their clean homes, laughing at how they carefully weaken Russia by proxy. Everything will be on fire around them. Their people will harvest their grief in full. The land will be on fire and the concrete will melt."
"Yet still the narrow-minded politicians and their stupid think tanks, thoughtfully twirling a glass of wine in their hands, talk about how they can deal with us without entering into a direct war. Dull idiots with a classical education."

He said that already the conflict in Ukraine is sliding into unknown, unpredictable territory of escalation due to the West's "unrestrained pumping of the Kiev regime with the most dangerous types of weapons."

Boy, I hope the US never decides to give up Ohio to Canada because Ohio treats Canadians poorly.
