    Mass graves in Ukraine.

In pretty much every case, when Russian forces are driven out of an area, they leave behind mass graves. Some of those buried n those graves are Ukrainian soldiers, but most are civilians who had no role in the fighting.

In a pine forest at the edge of Izyum the stench of death filled the air as a mass exhumation got under way.

The earth is giving up its secrets. Ukrainian officials believe war crimes have been committed, which they are determined to document.

Around 100 Ukrainian emergency service workers wearing blue plastic coverings dug into the earth, opening makeshift graves.

So. What do the Ukrainians do with their battlefield deaths?

“Ukraine war: Mass exhumations at Izyum forest graves site:” This is the headline on the BBC’s report, written from Izyum by Orla Guerin. The text is heavy on the atmospherics and gives prominence to a prosecutor from the Kyiv Justice Ministry

    [snip]
As it turns out, The Times and the Beeb [BBC] have reason to be careful this time. What appears to have occurred in Izyum during Russia’s occupation and what is now being discovered stand in direct contradiction to the assertions of the Ukrainians they quote to establish a clear version of events without putting their names to it.

An Associated Press video [posted below] shot in Izyum during the Ukrainian authorities’ guided tour last week reports there is a single mass grave containing the bodies of 17 Ukrainian soldiers, not civilians and not hundreds or a thousand. “It was surrounded by hundreds of individual graves,” The AP notes in a superimposed caption.

Should we assume the Uke's are taking as many battlefield deaths as the Russians? I mean, if the Russians have more artillery, more firepower, is it safe to assume they are inflicting significant losses on the Uke side?

And if so, what are the Ukrainians doing with their field dead?

    I'm not there, I don't know.

The truth will eventually come out. Russian Soldiers have a long history of killing and raping civilians. In WWII, Russian soldiers raped every German female from 8 to 80. Nothing's changed. Eventually it'll all come out.

Be skeptical. That said, it would not surprise me.

    Yes.

    Be very skeptical.

Sadly, that's not a barbarity limited to Russian soldiers.

This might or might not be true, but it sounds pretty iffy to me. Invading forces taking the time to bury the war dead of their enemy? And, what's with the topography of the ground? And, who put all those crosses there and carved names and dates on them?

This sounds suspiciously like more of the Ghost of Kiev tales.

Perhaps it's true, but it's very odd.
