Stacey Abrams says 'no such thing' as 6-week fetal heartbeat: 'Manufactured sound'

I think Stacey needs to stick to fast food and leave science to people with an IQ higher than their age.

"There is no such thing as a heartbeat at six weeks," Abrams, who is running against incumbent Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, told the audience. "It is a manufactured sound designed to convince people that men have the right to take control of a woman's body."

Science-wise, she's on the right track. Sort of. There is no "fetal heartbeat" at six weeks. There is no heart so there can't be a heartbeat, and the embryo isn't a fetus for a few more weeks, so the sound can't scientifically be termed "fetal."

There is, however, the development of a cardiac tube that will eventually become a heart if the embryo survives. That tube begins a rhythm around the sixth week. So, she likely knows there is no heart beating at that gestational point, but she doesn't know what's going on.

One thing -- abortion ban terminology isn't based on science for the most part. A good example would be the so-called heartbeat bills. They would be more accurate if termed, "cardiac tube activity" bills.

But according to experts, the term “fetal heartbeat” is misleading and medically inaccurate.

“While the heart does begin to develop at around six weeks, at this point the heart as we know it does not yet exist,” said Dr. Ian Fraser Golding, a pediatric and fetal cardiologist at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego.

Instead, at six weeks, the embryo will develop a tube that generates sporadic electrical impulses that eventually coordinate into rhythmic pulses, he said. (Six weeks of pregnancy is closer to four weeks of actual development, because pregnancy is measured from the first day of a woman’s last period, before she is actually pregnant.)

That's an excellent presentation of the facts, but it does not make the case this is a "manufactured sound" that is part of some nefarious plot by men to control women's bodies. Abrams is playing games with the truth for political purposes.

There is a heart as early as 4 weeks. It is just early in the development and looks like a tube but they have picked up the beat at double the rate of the mothers so. It only took more sensitive equipment to hear.

I agree. Abrams is playing games.

But, so are those who draw up "heartbeat bills."

Not even remotely close. From your own article: “While the heart does begin to develop at around six weeks, at this point the heart as we know it does not yet exist.”

So the heart is developing but the heart doesn't exist. Flies around a dumpster behind a Taco Bell even know that makes no sense. Then again science has never been a strong-point for liberals. They don't even know which gender has a penis or vagina.

Sorry, you lose. Better luck next time. I would try introducing logic to debate me but the choice is yours. May the horse be with you.

    Well, that was odd.

    Wrong.

    And, odd.

In a way, you're just like Abrams. Neither one of you really have a handle on what's happening.

Actually a heart beat indicates that there is a life involved.
