Kansas produces a lion's share of grain, but if Kansas farmers decided they would no longer feed the rest of the nation, someone would step in.

There's no reason great lake states shouldn't be compensated for sharing their water--but, share it they must if the situation becomes dire enough in other areas of the country.
The Great Lake states don't get compensated for the use of fresh water from navigable waters. One of the limited things the federal government has control over under our Constitution is what the Constitution refers to as its federal maritime jurisdiction. That equals navigable waters.

Why?

I get where you're coming from, but that still doesn't excuse letting people die from a lack of water. That's what I mean by "dire enough."

We have a problem now. Too many people. We can focus on reducing the birth rate--and we ought to--but until the population falls to a sustainable rate, we're going to have to all pitch in and do what's right for our fellow citizens.

We're not at the point yet where they need to divert large amounts from the Great Lakes, but unless we get a few years of rain deluge, we could soon be there.

I'm not advocating diversion to increase anyone's "wealth or livelihood."

I'm just talking about sustaining life in our nation.

We all love our lush green lawns and flowerbeds, but we can do without them. To heck with over-watering to maintain golf courses. Let the grass die. Let the greens become browns. Diverted water should be used to sustain life.

    That's sad.

I understand the purpose behind the jurisdiction of the waters, but I also feel that there could be compensation.

A lot of jobs to build the aqueducts / pipes to move that water to where it is needed.

If you can't read between the lines, then I don't know what to tell you.

We know how to build nuclear plants, desalination plants and pipelines. Go!
Call your state legislators and insist they approve the Article V convention of States to propose amendments.

I pledge allegiance to the Constitution as written and understood by this nation's founders, and to the Republic it created, an indivisible union of sovereign States, with liberty and justice for all.
