White rice and pasta are just as bad for your heart as CANDY, study suggests

This is true for couch potatoes, but not for fitness buffs (assuming they are not massively overeating). In fact for resistance trainers, white rice is better than brown rice.

You have to watch these neutron articles for the masses. They never tell the whole story.

White rice and pasta are just as bad for your heart as CANDY, study suggests

Eating lots of white rice is just as bad for your heart in the long run as consuming lots of candy, a study suggests.

Researchers in Iran looked at the risk of heart disease among people whose diets were high in refined grains compared to whole grains.

They found those who ate refined grains - processed to give them a finer texture and longer shelf life - were more likely to develop coronary artery disease in middle-age.

Lead study author Dr Mohammad Amin Khajavi Gaskarei said the damage done by a diet high in these grains was similar to eating lots of junk food.

‘A diet that includes consuming a high amount of unhealthy and refined grains can be considered similar to consuming a diet containing a lot of unhealthy sugars and oils,' he said.

Refined grains are broken down rapidly by the body because they have been stripped of fiber, which leads to a post-meal spike in blood-sugar levels.

I agree. They might be bad if you eat them all the time or if you don't exercise, but I don't see them as being as bad as candy.

I do like white Basmati rice with steamed veggies and a bit of soy sauce and sesame seed oil. Mmmm...

    I can skip the candy.

I am not a candy person.

I eat a lot of white rice. Goya medium grain. 1/2 cup with 12 oz. chicken breast and a spinach salad.

I also make red beans and rice, New Orleans style.

Looks to me like this "study" was pretty bunk. There could be many contributing variables, but if the article is accurate, and the quote below is the only thing they compared, I call complete BS. Furthermore, I don't think I'll be looking to Iran for cutting edge scientific study. But that's just me.

The study looked at 1,168 healthy patients and compared them to 1,369 patients with coronary artery disease.

Participants answered a food frequency questionnaire to determine how often they ate whole and refined grains.

Yum! What do you put in your red beans and rice? I love the dish, but I never get it quite like the real thing.

I agree. What is a healthy person? (for the study)

Self reporting meals tends not to work unless the study participants must keep a food log.

Genetics also plays a role, as with most maladies.

When I eat white rice, which is seldom, I actually measure it , a half cup is a serving and, that's what I have. Then, the majority of the plate is filled with vegetables.

A little meat sometimes, chicken or, thin sliced sirloin.

I don't eat much white rice, I prefer brown. Bread is an occasional thing. Pasta, well, that's one of the main food groups as far as I'm concerned.

In general, the American population doesn't seem to be very conscious of what they consume, reasons why 'fast food' is so popular. Even those that spend a good amount of time at the gym seem to go for the prepared foods or take out. Even before I 'had to' be conscious of what I ate, I ate relatively healthy. But I do have a sweet tooth.
