The Pokémon franchise boasts 122 video games on various consoles, with over 380 million units sold as of March 2021. According to Statista, Pokémon Red, Green and Blue is the franchise’s most successful game, with more than 31 million units shipped worldwide.

As of July 2022, there were 905 unique Pokémon. There were also over 9,000 unique English-language Pokémon cards, according to Bulbapedia, creating substantial work for any collector trying to “catch 'em all.”

Although you don’t need to purchase rare cards at auction in order to build a deck and battle other players, there are collectors willing to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on the rarest cards.

The urge of some collectors to own something unique, something that no other collector has, sometimes defies all reason and good sense. Baseball card companies do the same thing - create a "1/1" card of a popular player and put it in a random card pack. Collectors and investors will buy hundreds of packs (for anywhere from $6 to $20 a pack) in hopes of finding a unique card that they can sell or auction for tens of thousands. It's a piece of pasteboard - an entirely artificial rarity, with zero intrinsic value. I'll confess I don't get it.

Most the value cards are in as SW said in newer 1 of 1 type editions, sometimes in box sets that cost hundreds and even thousands of dollars. All those 80's junk wax era cards are for the most part as worthless today as they were back when new. This is no longer a hobby for kids, adults took it over and made a business out of it unfortunately, card makers are happy to respond to it seeing profits that they never dreamed of having just even 10 years ago! Perosnally i think the bubble with this hobby is due for a burst soon, just too many so called rare cards are being produced, what good are 1/1 cards for star players when they release 100 different 1/1 variations per year.

I have collection of old Penthouse magazines. We used to have them stored in the back of the deli where we met.

If anyone knows a good fence that can move them let me know. We never dealt in those type of items in my time.

They have to be worth some cash.

Like Lionel trains. My Dad and Uncle (Uncle David) were into it - and HO. I liked the Lionel O Gauge. At one time, my uncle said that our lionels could've put me through college. Now, it's all virtually worthless. Nobody wants it. It's sad but these kids won't touch them -- oh, yes, for 5 minutes at Christmas around the tree but that's it.

I read a story several years ago about some folks who saw a dozen or more boxes of baseball cards - the storage boxes that hold about 3200 cards - at a thrift store and picked them up very cheaply. They were associated with a charitable organization and planned to sell the cards online to benefit that charity. Unfortunately, what they didn't know (and every card collector does) is that all the card companies massively over-produced in the late '80s and early '90s, and there were four or five big companies at the time and a few smaller ones. Dealers and collectors, if they somehow end up with a bunch of those cards now, just throw them away. I knew a guy who moved here from Philadelphia, and before he left he filled a recycling barrel with worthless cards. I've got a stack of boxes like that down in my basement about six feet high.

On the other hand, occasionally a thrift shop find is a tad bit more financially rewarding. I was checking out a Goodwill store where I sometimes find interesting old books last week, and I happened to see some big pieces of framed art leaning against a random wall. Midway through the stack I saw what was clearly a large, beautifully framed photo. Moving other things aside, I saw the face (which I recognized) and a large silver paint-pen signature - "Ted Williams" - and for a second or two I had an out-of-body experience. With my senior discount I shelled out five bucks and change. This morning I took it to a guy I know who owns one of the better known sports memorabilia auction houses and consigned it with him, and he said he'd expect it to fetch somewhere in the $700-800 range.

I used to briefly Pokemon cards during the first epoch of them being all the rage around the turn of the century. The game itself, in my experience, was easy peasy compared to like Magic: The Gathering. I mean the big "secret" was just to build a simple, straightforward speed deck that didn't rely on evolving your Pokemon and piled in the Trainer cards for maximum deck control and you'd win the vast majority of the time against all the convoluted, elaborate strategies of the so-called genius master deck builders who I think were more interested in showing off their intellect in coming up with complex ideas than in actually being practical and winning. And if your deck had Sneasel from the Neo Genesis set, you pretty much won every time against any deck that didn't. I quit around the time that that card got banned from tournament play for being too awesome, by coincidence. I have fond memories of things like placing second in the Gym Heroes set launch tournament at my local Wizards of the Coast store and having a couple of the pretentious 25-year-old Pokemon Masters I just mentioned befriend me as a result, stuff like that.

Anyway, I still have lots of the cards that were considered valuable back then, but sheeeeeeeeeeeesh, no I cannot be brought to go through the kind of ridiculous (and expensive!!) processes needed to secure like absolute perfect condition for them (I've read about those) and don't own any of the particular cards mentioned in the OP. I do, however, have the complete 1st editions of the Jungle and Fossil sets and most of the original Base Set's 1st edition cards and several other card sets that, minus 1st editions, are otherwise complete (including Base Set 2, Team Rocket, Gym Heroes, and Neo Discovery, along with near-complete Gym Challenge and Neo Genesis sets) and tons of special promo cards from the era that I mostly got from participating in the Pokemon TCG League. Not sure how valuable they are today, though I'm sure some of the rarer ones have gained in value. They're all buried in binders in one of my closets, alongside a larger volume of old Magic cards (that just happen to include Black Lotus, just pointing it out). Ain't resumed playing or collecting in my adult years. Now that I have to pay my own living expenses and not just for fun stuff. (Adulthood sucks. Would not recommend.)

My son loves them. Even the older ones. But you're right. For all but a few kids, they can't compete with an iPad.
