You're correct in that there's no closing the current divide. I don't want it closed if that means moving more to the left.

We've had enough of moving to the left. This country has been moving to the left practically my entire life.

a defeat for Republicans, and specifically Trumpism.

A defeat for Trump is a win for Republicans. Trump did a lot for the country and the party, but the time has come that they need to move on from him. Which does not necessarily mean moving on from his policies. Trump's insane response to the election sealed his fate, he will never be elected again.
