In the battle of airports, the West Coast wins

A recent ranking of the best and worst airports in the US reveal coastal differences.

The Wall Street Journal ranked the top 20 largest airports in the US across 19 factors, with some stark findings:

    • California airports are the cream of the crop — San Francisco was the top-rated large airport, while Sacramento took the crown for top-ranked midsize airport.
    • Avoid New York and New Jersey at all costs — Newark and JFK were the two worst-ranked large airports, while LaGuardia was the worst-ranked midsize airport.

The bottom line? Now might be the time to take that holiday trip to Hawaii — if your flight is canceled, at least you’ll have a nice place to pass the time.

What did they base their findings on?

I tried to read The Wall Street Journal article contained in your link, but it's a paywall...

I can't imagine LAX or San Francisco is a fun place to be even if less crowded and weather troubled as the East Coast.

I'm not sure why people get excited about airports. I judge them more on what surrounds them after you get out. So I would fly to San Diego and drive up to LA or sometimes Ontario airport instead of LA. I would go to Sacramento before San Fransisco.

I dread NY airports or Newark. Atlanta is a nice stop but terrible to get in and out of. If you are early then there is nothing nearby.

Give me the smaller airports any day.
    Let's go Brandon !!!

In my area, Akron/Canton (CAK) is a fantastic airport to fly in and out of. San Diego is great, but the approach is a bit hairy from an aviation standpoint.

I've flown into/out of every major airport in California. The first time flying into Oakland, I became a bit terrified, when it looked like it would be a water landing.......just the path the final approach takes, looked like we were landing in the water.

I've also flown either into or, out of......Philly, Charleston, Atlanta, JFK, Tucson and Phoenix and Frankfurt Germany.

To me, one airport looks just like another .

I have been using EWR (Newark) for decades. No complaints.

How did they miss Boston, Logan as one of the most funky airports ever built?

While I'm loath to admit it, SFO is pretty well configured. The only problem is that even though it has BART service, BART is basically a homeless shelter on wheels now rather than a public transit option. So I just pay $100+ to get the nicer Uber now.

I certainly agree with the worse list. So far as large goes, San Fran is nice. I also really like Dulles in the DC metro area. For smaller transfer airports, Charleston is really nice.
