I believe there are certain categories of essential workers where the government can act. In that case it was Air Traffic Control that would have grounded commercial and freight air traffic. On the other hand I don't believe the government can't force a labor agreement, just require a return to work.

Weren't the air traffic controllers federal employees at that time?

I think they were able to be fired because they had a federal contract which they were violating, but they were not actual government employees.

Yes, some sort of federal connection.

joe biden has asked Congress to pass legislation to avert the rail strike. A strike right now would be disastrous to the economy and the unions, as usual, are demanding the moon.

Actually, I don't know why he is finally going to Congress when heretofore he has just been using Executive Orders to get what he wants. Maybe this way he can tell the unions it wasn't really him.

Two predictions, Congress won't act until after the strike has been called. Secondly, the unions won't pay heed to Congress until after Christmas.
How will the administration spin this? Biden claims that he's the most pro union workers president in history, but he supports taking away the union workers ability to go on strike.

Let's get real here. Biden is a joke, the union is asking for a 25% pay increase. Can you say more inflation? C'mon, 25%? Joe should be telling them to get real. Or maybe Joe gets 10% so the bigger the better.

The House votes to avert a potentially devastating railroad strike.

Basically, the unions got all they asked for.
