I'm just surprised this made it up the chain of command to a court. Can the military not work these things out within their units?

I guess, on topic, every nickname I've had in my life was a term of endearment and in good nature, no matter how offensive it might have been to a third party. This seems stupid.

Imagine going to War against a real enemy and being so damn sensitive?

BTW it is not clear in the story that any actual pilot complained so I take that to mean some hire up got all triggered about so called sexual harassment rules even with comments not in anyway directed at them. And I pictured my number one suspect as identified in the story.

This has made me start thinking about some of the nicknames we had for guys at Bragg...

There was "Spearchucker", a highly decorated and respected Master Sergeant, who of course was Black.

We had "MAFU", which stood for "Mexican, All $#@!ed Up", a great tracker and someone who I swear could smell tripwires and boobytraps.

"Priest" was a guy who actually studied at a seminary to become a Catholic Priest before he decided he was better suited for shooting people and blowing stuff up.

"Mick" of course, was our token Drunk Irishman.

"Chief" was our resident Mescalero Apache.

"Bravo Hotel" was from the US Virgin Islands. He got the nickname Bravo Hotel (Phonetic Alphabet for BH) because he had like the biggest head of any human who ever lived. I had a deal with him that if he was KIA, I would get his head to use as a hood ornament on the K5 Blazer I had at the time.

One of my favorites was "Big Daddy" so called because he could have Idi Amin's twin brother. We used to introduce him to people (mostly women) in bars as "His Excellency, President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hajj Doctor Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, Lord of all the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Sea and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular". I think we used to throw "and Protector of the Children of Israel" in there every once in a while.

There was one guy I always referred to as "You Jabba the Hut Pet Looking $#@!er" because he looked like Jabba the Hut's Pet.



I could give you a whole list of them, but the thing is, none of them were intended to be offensive or were seen as offensive by the guys who wore them. They were all brothers and any of us would have taken a bullet for any of the others in a heartbeat.

I won't even mention what I was called (generally behind my back ) for years.

We had some great nick names in the Army. Mamba, piranha, kiwi, t-bone, Eagle beak, roboto, daffy.

Senior Air Force officers charged over 'inappropriate' fighter pilot nickname

OTTAWA — Two senior Air Force officers have been charged for allegedly failing to stop a group of fighter pilots from assigning an inappropriate nickname to another member in June.

Col. Colin Marks and Lt.-Col. Corey Mask each face one charge of failing to effectively carry out their responsibilities and will face disciplinary hearings, according to the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Specifically, military police have accused the two officers of having failed to enforce the military's orders when it comes to preventing and addressing sexual misconduct.

Neither Marks nor Mask responded to requests for comment on Monday.

Air Force spokesman Maj. Trevor Reid said in a statement Monday that both officers were charged last month.

The charges are not criminal in nature, and Reid said their hearings will be conducted by other officers in Cold Lake.

A summary hearing is scheduled for Mask on Dec. 5 and will be heard by the commander of military cadets, Brig.-Gen. Jamie Speiser-Blanchet.

Marks's hearing is scheduled for Dec. 12 and will be conducted by Col. Robert McBride, commander of 3rd Canadian Division Support Base Edmonton.

Neither hearing will be open to the public, Reid said.

"The Royal Canadian Air Force believes in a just culture, centred upon supporting victims and their well-being," Reid said in a written statement.

The article doesn't say. I also wondered that.

Oh well, at least Canada has no need for a competent air force.

Probably a reprimand. But that could end a career.

That is what I would expect as well. a letter of reprimand placed in their personnel file. That would indeed probably be a career ender, at least in the US. They would end up being passed over for promotion and would eventually be ushered out of the service.
