We shared a 1/2 a cow with the SIL this past fall. We know where it was born, what it grazed on, how it was treated, and how it was killed and butchered. We also were supporting a local farmer in the process. Our eggs come from another neighbor, know what the hens ate, etc. Being aware of where things come from, how they were treated, regardless of vegan or carnivore, is personal choice.

We still have places like Mickey D's, where 'you' really don't know what you are eating, and likely prefer it that way.
Nothing beats straight out of your own garden.

I don't even trust those Fast Food places with all the idiots you hear about working there. Even before COVID when I was traveling regularly, I would stop at a grocery store because they have open clean bathrooms, quality lunches at the deli that you can pick from and self scan your way back on the road.
    Let's go Brandon !!!

I used to hunt deer with my dad and brother. Then one day I found venison unappealing. I stopped liking it whether it was steaks, ground into burgers or sausage. So, I quit hunting deer.

Trophy is a good (though unfortunate) adjective for what I was trying to express, thank you. I hate when work distracts me from personal forays on forums....

I’ve never had a problem getting very close to deer as long as I’m not being aggressive or fast in my movements . They are very curious animals.

That's no challenge. An unarmed doe against a compound bow? No deer has ever snuck up behind you and snorted at you. An elk, maybe but not a deer. Unless you were at the local petting zoo, and I'm pretty sure they don't allow bow hunting in there.

That's the problem we always had with California and Texas hunters when I grew up in the mountains of Colorado. Every year the idiots shot one of their own and they never knew how to keep their friend from bleeding out. They'd also shoot cows because they honestly didn't know the difference. The dad of a good friend of mine would lease out his large acreage to them--and they paid well for the privilege. He'd make fun of them but he'd take their money. Mostly, they just wanted to be seen in their orange vests in the local cafes. LOL

We don't lease our land to hunters although we often get asked to do so. If they're tracking a deer they've wounded, we let them track it. But, they don't get to hunt it. Especially if they make up stories about deer stalking them. LOL That was a good one. I needed a laugh!

I read an interesting book years ago, a work of fiction called 'Deerlover'. A man whose wife was seriously into animal rights becomes a widower, and in his grief he begins reading some of the materials she had on the topic. And then he begins to think how easy it would be to disguise himself as a hunter, go to where deer hunting is in season, and...yeah, you can probably guess the rest. I'm pretty sure I still have my copy around here...somewhere. Long out of print, but you can usually find a copy on eBay or AbeBooks for less than ten bucks (no pun intended, of course).
