Yes, the Jihadists didn't want US troops in the Middle East. So? Who in the US was going to advocate removing them? Not neocons. Not realists. Isolationists? They are not relevant in US politics.

The US knew the danger presented by the Jihadists. They failed to protect us. The proximate cause was the firewall between intelligence and law enforcement. What our leaders failed to realize is that militant Islam isn't isn't a law enforcement issue. It is a warfighting issue. If Jihadists are operating inside the US the goal ought not be to arrest them, but rather to engage and destroy them.
