Global coal use is on course to hit all-time high this year, IEA says

Global coal use is on course to increase by 1.2% to hit a record high this year, according to a report from the International Energy Agency.


It comes at a time of significant volatility and uncertainty in global energy markets, with the IEA stating that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in Feb. 2022 had “sharply altered the dynamics of coal trade, price levels, and supply and demand patterns in 2022.”




“Coal markets have been shaken severely in 2022, with traditional trade flows disrupted, prices soaring and demand set to grow by 1.2%, reaching an all-time high and surpassing 8 billion metric tons for the first time,” the IEA said in its Coal 2022 report, published Dec. 16.


The price of fossil fuels saw a substantial jump this year, the agency said, “with natural gas showing the sharpest increase.”
“This has prompted a wave of fuel switching away from gas, pushing up demand for more price competitive options, including coal in some regions,” it added.

Imagine being the person in the Midwest that kept his coal stove running. He is sitting there right now without a worry in the world of the left windmills that are shut down due to high winds or those solar panels covered with ice and snow.


Meanwhile his neighbors EV will only get half the mileage today because of the cold and his heaters using the charge.
They will be over begging for a cup of hot coffee.

Europe is buying almost 50% more U.S. coal as winter approaches and the Russian invasion of Ukraine drags on, increasing the percentage of U.S. coal shipped to Europe to the highest level since 2016. The overall value of U.S. coal exports to Europe has risen significantly more, up 184.21%, according to the latest Census Bureau

I was driving along a country road the other day, that runs parallel to a train track. It's actually pretty neat when there's a train on it, starts out on your left side, then passes underneath you as you're driving, and travels on your right for a few miles very close to the road. Then, a few miles down the road, the train will pass over a bridge that the road runs under. It's very cool if you like trains.

It was a massively long freight train pulling with six engines, and I counted 20 coal cars heaped with coal. I had to smile.
