The Best Lasagna I Have Ever Had

The wife retired recently and decided that in addition to re-landscaping the entire front yard, including digging a new and larger goldfish pond, she would try her hand at cooking - something she'd never really had time to do much of. She found a recipe for lasagna on the 'allrecipes' site, bought all the ingredients it called for and set about making it this last Wednesday. She'd never even thought about doing something like this - neither one of us has ever really done much cooking - and to be honest I wasn't expecting too much. I just hoped for her sake that it would be edible and not a total disaster.

Well, as the thread title gives away, the resulting dish was spectacular, and I couldn't stop complimenting her on it between bites. I've had plenty of lasagnas over the years, but this was by far better than any I've ever encountered. The only divergence from the recipe that she made was that she left out the mushrooms, because she doesn't like mushrooms - otherwise she did it scrupulously per the instructions. I'm about to go heat up a piece for lunch, as a matter of fact. Check it out.

I would have left out canned mushrooms as well - those things are awful and don't have any real mushroom flavor anyway.

Looks good, think I'll try it too. But you can bet I'll be putting the mushrooms in there!

The recipe says canned. I'm sure either would work, but sometimes with fresh mushrooms they shed so much water when cooking them, they can make things soggy. Could always saute them first, but that sounds like more work...

I'd rather saute the mushrooms than have something that adds no flavor to the lasagna. I don't mind a canned sauce because there are some good ones out there or just use a passata, since you have to create the meat sauce anyway. I never ate a canned mushroom until I was an adult, so I guess I never acquired a tolerance for them or most canned vegetables for that matter. The only canned vegetable my mother ever bought was corn, otherwise veggies were either fresh or frozen.
