The TV guy came back the next day, tinkered around, and reported someone had turned the brightness knob all the way down. Now who did that?!?!

Where I grew up, we got TV out of Youngstown. If my father went out with a pipe wrench, he could turn the antenna and maybe get some out of Pittsburgh. I remember when somebody in the area that color TV. That was incredible.

Actually, the way TV works now and the way TV worked back in the '50s are two different things.

I'm still trying to figure out how a fax machine works.

I was the channel changer. No remote in our house for many years, and glory be the day that a remote was brought home.

And who remembers setting up rooftop or attic antennas?
Some people still use them in rural areas. Also, there are new digital versions today. Antennas are now making a comeback given that people are dropping their cable and streaming much of their programming off the internet. They then use digital antennas to pick up local tv service so they can get local news etc.

Then there was a fight over who possessed the remote.

No fight, in strict possession of my father. And I do mean strict possession. He took it with him when he left the room, at the end of the night, etc.

He thought it would keep us from 'breaking' it.
