The Best Legal Defense? Blame God.

Believe it or not, I run into nuts like this on a weekly basis. Welcome to deep red Kansas, where kooks abound. Fortunately, not all of them call up elected officials and threaten to kill them and then use the defense that they were only serving as a messenger of God.

Federal prosecutors say Chase Neill, 32, from Lawrence in northeastern Kansas, fixated on LaTurner before leaving an after-hours voicemail with the congressman's Topeka office that included, “I will kill you.” Neill's trial comes amid a sharp rise in reported threats against elected officials and their families.

In court Thursday, Neill told jurors he values his soul and was required by God to act when he “heard the sound of the trumpet.”

He also showed jurors a LinkedIn page for himself, saying he dealt with “matters concerning over 400 million lives lost with high sorcery.”

“I am held to an obligation by our Creator,” Neill said.

I guess the moral of the story is -- don't let your teen son practice his trumpet in the garage if you have loony neighbors.

Doesn't Kansas have a fairly low murder rate?
Whoever criticizes capitalism, while approving immigration, whose working class is its first victim, had better shut up. Whoever criticizes immigration, while remaining silent about capitalism, should do the same.

Probably. At least in rural areas. It's virtually unheard of in my neck of the woods, which is why we're all so shocked when someone kills someone.

This guy, though, was from Lawrence, and they're a little kooky there. Actually, they're a little kooky all over the state, but rarely do they do what he did.

It isn't a legal defense, but if the jury is religious, who knows.

So the defendant had a dummy for a lawyer (himself). Unless the article is not detailed, the prosecutor could have done a better job on cross examination. If you know you work in a heavily religious area get to know it so you can have an effective cross examination for this sort of answer. You can use the bible to move the jury where you want them to go. This is typically not allowed in federal court, but the defendant opened the door.

By "kooky", you mean they're not into infanticide.

I wonder if he suffers from auditory hallucinations. The article mentions a head injury sustained four or five years ago.
In quoting my post, you affirm and agree that you have not been goaded, provoked, emotionally manipulated or otherwise coerced into responding.

You didn't read the story did you? You just lash out like a blind man with a stick--having no clue what's going on.

Lawrence is a liberal community, home to KU, and this guy threatened to kill a GOP official if he voted to overrule Laura Kelly's draconian pandemic measures.

    You're showing your ignorance again.
