Is tipping getting out of control? Many consumers say yes...

Across the country, there’s a silent frustration brewing about an age-old practice that many say is getting out of hand: tipping.

Some fed-up consumers are posting rants on social media complaining about tip requests at drive-thrus, while others say they’re tired of being asked to leave a gratuity for a muffin or a simple cup of coffee at their neighborhood bakery. What’s next, they wonder -- are we going to be tipping our doctors and dentists, too?

As more businesses adopt digital payment methods, customers are automatically being prompted to leave a gratuity — many times as high as 30% — at places they normally wouldn’t. And some say it has become more frustrating as the price of items has skyrocketed due to inflation, which eased to 6.5% in December but still remains painfully high.

“Suddenly, these screens are at every establishment we encounter. They’re popping up online as well for online orders. And I fear that there is no end,” said etiquette expert Thomas Farley, who considers the whole thing somewhat of “an invasion.”

I read an article about tipping at a coffee shop for just a cup of coffee. Baristas were divided on the topic.

I ran into that years ago at a Dunkin Donuts. I go wait in line for a black coffee and there is a tip jar with the word Tips taped to the front. Not going to happen.

Should I tip the woman at the cash register at the grocery store?

I am a very generous tipper all year long to people that actually earn it like a good waitress that does more than their job or makes a servers wage.

I also refuse to Christmas tip. I'm your customer not your sugar daddy.

It seems that every take out place now has an on-screen tip option, an on counter tip option or just a sad droopy teenager. It's gotten way out of control. I tip well, but c'mon.

I don't really mind places asking for tips, it never hurts to ask. I don't go crazy with it.

I've noticed it's kind of regional. Here in NE Ohio, places like Dunkin or Panera don't have tip jars, but in PA they do. I usually don't tip the Barista, because I only get simple cups of coffee, but I did tip the Starbuck's gal a buck the other day, because there were a gaggle of people standing around waiting for their fancy coffee drinks, and when I ordered a regular cuppa, she had it on the counter in seconds. I usually tip the pizza place too, because it looks miserable to work in there, lol. I always try to tip cash, and almost never fill out the credit card line.

Places I frequent on a regular basis I tip generously whether it’s a coffee shop or a nicer restaurant.

If a tip is added to the bill, I don’t add to it unless the food and service was exceptional. Generally my tip would have been greater than the added on gratuity.

I haven’t noticed tip jars in fast food places. I wouldn’t put anything in those anyway other than change.

I’m finding it a little more difficult to tip generously today because restaurant workers are no longer paid a token hourly wage.

A while back my wife and I were at a local restaurant we generally don’t patronize. No specific reason. The waitress asked if we wanted a drink. I said yes, I’d like a glass of your house Merlot. Just as a joke I pronounced Merlot just as it’s spelled. The waitress arrogantly corrected me. I did not tip her generously at the conclusion of our dining experience.

Call me old and old fashioned but I grew up where a tip was for at table service, bar tenders, pizza delivery, and hotel services. It certainly had nothing to do with picking up fast food at a window or counter.

I also never liked the idea that you are meant to cough up a % of the bill or your a bad person. I tip generous for good service and perhaps not so much if it was questionable. That was the incentive part of the deal.

Anytime someone serves me anything I either tip or express gratitude.

I loathe people who treat servers like sht.

It's low class. Show me a person who treats servers poorly and I'll show you someone that never gets to tell anybody else what to do .

The expectation of a high percentage tip is certainly out there, independent of service
I guess we'll have to go to a system where the hospitality and tourism industries pays the workers a regular wage. Of course then every dime will be reported to the IRS And sadly young attractive wait staff will no longer flirt a little bit ith old folks like us

    My sister says I over-tip.

    I don't agree.

I never tip less than $5--usually for coffee--but I sometimes tip more than the actual bill. I tip for service. I like encouraging people who are good servers, so I tip them more.

But, I'll hand money to people who look down and out, too. A few months ago, I saw a skinny guy who looked like a tweaker looking in the trashcan at Aldi's. For what I don't know. But I said, "Hey there, do you need some money?" I gave him $20, and he took it, but I think it was hard for him to take it. He pinched the very corner of it between his thumb and finger. Maybe he had an issue about touching something I'd just touched. I don't know, but you gotta help people.
