I really don't understand that philosophy given today's political landscape. Believe me, many tried to give the 'your sexual orientation is your business, not mine' and they were scorched a political lesson. That your business not mine was in fact many Observer's response to the aids crisis some decades ago. Mine included. Hey.....it ain't me, so.......
Recalling that the majority of aids cases in this country...at the height of the aids crisis.....were gay males having sex with other gay males, and I mean the numbers were not even close. Second place winners involved iv drug use, using the same needles to inject whatever drug, heterosexual transmissions a distant third. The thought process for most of us was, hey, I don't engage in behavior that would put me at risk for aids.....so I couldn't care less.
But that thought process was soundly debunked. That Americans didn't care was soon considered a sin, and amongst other actions an immediate aids education endeavor was begun. Tax payer funded attempts to find a cure, all out marches on Washington DC where we were convinced to do 'our part'. We soon learned that what was happening in people's bedroom wasn't in fact private. Indeed, it was causing a holocaust amongst gay men and we were all called to action. Now of course.....ceasing the behavior we all knew was causing the actual disease was never offered as a solution. The Captain Obvious solutions of don't share needles and don't have anal sex wasn't ever considered, indeed, was considered homophobic and ignorant.
We actually did needle handouts as an aids solution, tried to educate gay men on what they already knew was killing them...in a suicidal fashion in my opinion.
Remember 'safe sex' was a term invented in the era of aids. It meant putting a .07 millimeter piece of latex between you and a most deadly disease...or some such $#@!. F'n rocket scientists.
