I switch it up, but usually go with servers in the USA. Sometimes I use communist dictatorships like Canada, lol.

The only time I have ever been hacked is when I had a VPN. I consider it as having a backdoor, and being less secure. I don't use one at all.

It was a paid one, I think it was Express VPN. I was paying monthly.

When I did use one though I set it to Seattle unless of course I wanted to do a search from another country to get different search results, or see if I can watch a different Netflix, or have access to youtube vids that are restricted in our country.

Usually when someone gets hacked then it is something they installed on their computer.
When your information is stolen it is usually someone that you sent the information to. That includes your bank, doctor, telephone company...

A VPN is when you don't want someone to know who or where you are. A VPN normally adds encryption to protect your content but if you are on wifi then they can be stealing what you type before it gets encrypted.
The first time I had credit card theft it was a bank employee. People have the keys. A VPN has keys.

I don't have wi-fi in my home. My router doesn't even have it as an option. I connect directly to the router. I don't install anything or do electronic banking or anything like that and mostly keep to myself. I am not high risk for that kind of thing. I use my computer for simple tasks, and research. However at the time I was sending letters to representatives about vitamin D and ruffled a few feathers. Either way a VPN does create a back door.
