TBH, I would not have attended college at all if I could do it over.

Many people that go to college end up not using their degree but it shows employers that you have the basic skills and the ability to learn.

And cast aside those folk who also have an ability to learn but are not hampered by what others have told them to think.

I was able to move into management in every job I held and was able to leverage that into more responsible positions until I finally decided 42 years ago what I really needed to do was to go into business for myself. In full disclosure I do not have a college degree. I have some college credits from a Junior College in Florida and from the University of Maryland but I never graduated. I sometimes think maybe I should have struck around for another year but in the overall scheme of things it was truly unnecessary. I have been relatively successful at my business. I was told 42 years ago I wouldn't last six months but here I am 42 years later still running the same business and while not rich and famous certainly am able to live a comfortable life.

Sure Algebra and Geometry have some life uses although trig does not for the vast majority. A little bit better writing skills that they learned in junior high
Is there enough stuff there to justify 4 years of school? Or is it simply because society doesn't know what to do with they all day?

With all the new technology available these days -- HS could certainly stand to be reworked to better serve the students.

But, I've never seen an 8th grader that really had a good concept of the subjects that should be taught in HS.

The best advice I heard recently for kids was out of the mouth of an idiot. Howard Stern told kids to just be the best at whatever you do and it will open up opportunities. If your a dishwasher then do the best job you can and soon you will be noticed and moved up. Then do the best you can again.
But the best part of it is doing what you, I and it sounds like many have done here; become an expert and start your own business.
Kids would also be surprised how outsiders see you. I know many machine operators that became interested in what they were doing, they impress a tech-rep that comes in dealing with the equipment or tooling. Next thing they know they are being asked to become a salesperson to sell the tooling or give tech support.

It does but that's an awful lot to pay for assuring a future employer that you're competent for an entry level position.

That's where a smaller college can be your friend. I could not return to college the first time after being put on collection and had to opt for a smaller school that was more affordable. Once I got into the industry the school name meant nothing. It was "what have you done for me" and how do you conduct yourself.

Just go and talk to somebody that dropped out their sophomore year of high school and you'll understand the benefit of staying in school. College isn't for everybody (although it can sure be helpful in some career paths), but high school certainly is for pretty much everybody with very few exceptions.

I think HS could do more, although 4 years seems extreme, but they seldom do.
