I think that this years Best Picture Oscar winner was the first film since The Silence of the Lambs to win the "big 3" - Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and Screenplay. Probably the only other movie to do it that anyone is likely to have watched is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Everything Everywhere All at Once is being called a sci-fi film, so I'll probably watch it eventually. A film that is advertised as being about time rupturing and that kind of thing sort of puts me in mind of Cloud Atlas, which I found impossible to watch, so we'll see.

I haven't seen The Whale, and I find the subject matter somewhat distasteful, so I may decide to give it a pass. I've heard that Brendan Frasier was amazing in it, but every article I've read in the past few months has predicted that as great as his performance was he was probably going to lose to Austin Butler for Elvis (which I did see, and it's a shame in a way that both movies were released in the same year).

Top Gun:Maverick didn't have a hope. Mainly only movies that have a foreign flavor/origin or celebrate diversity and virtue signalling can expect to be 'honored.'

It's a night of self aggrandizing and ugly dresses that most people have no interest in.

Too late to edit Post #11. I meant, of course, the Big 5, not 3. Math was never my strong suit.

I wouldn't presume to say that the wrong choice was made until I, at a minimum, watched the movie that received the award. In any case, the other nominees, with a couple of exceptions, were not really celebrating or signaling anything - unless you count The Fabelmans, which was Spielberg's attempt to make being a nerdy young filmmaker appear to be a cool thing.

I turned on my Ruko, went to Prime video and Top Gun Maverick was up top recommended for me. So I watched it. I liked it. Probably more than the first one.
