    The 22 man

If I'm honest I don't like guns. But I did like this, I thought some of you might enjoy it. A guy on the internet claimed he could make a 710 yard shot with a 22 long rifle and iron sights only. Garand Thumb invited him onto the show to prove it. This was great.

I do the iron sights over the new tech.

But same with land nav. The new guys are in trouble when tech is down.

An SF colonel said he never saw better land nav on our first DMZ mission in 1989. If you know about SF accession that means a lot.

The fact is, land navigation was not very difficult on the DMZ. Terrain Associstion was as easy as it gets. You had prominant features which were unmistakable. Navigation was the least of the concerns there.

I would tend to call BS on somone who makes the claim that they can hit a 700+ yard target with a 22 rifle. Especially with iron sights. I do believe though that most experienced shooters could do it with a good spotter and multiple attempts.

I have a Ruger 10/22 and it is a very fine rifle. It's fun to shoot. I don't practice as much as I did when it was a requirement for my job, but 200 yards is the farthest range I'll practice with now. Currently I have no scope mounted on that rifle and I'm not inclined to get one.

His shot was close, and the gun he was using was unfamiliar. Every single gun will be slightly different. It's possible that he did it when he was younger like he said. Also it was windy, and everything is a factor even the land. He was close considering how far away the target was. : ) I think if they would have let him have more shots he might have got it, especially if he would have had a few days in advance to practice with that gun. Either way it was a great vid.

I believe he was exaggerating. That’s a ridiculously long shot with a 22 using iron sights. Annie Oakley couldn’t make that shot.
