I imagine it can be the same regarding plants since they uptake water. Lots of people use the galvanized stuff for gardening, even for raised garden beds. In my opinion the article below contradicts itself in this way, but maybe I'm wrong.

    Lead and cadmium:

"The zinc in the galvanized steel also contains lead and cadmium metals. These metals are added to the galvanized steel during the manufacturing process.

So, these metals will get mixed in the water if you use galvanized steel in the water pipe. So, the water can be poisonous for use of galvanized steel.
    Deposits of galvanized steel:

If you use galvanized steel for food storage, cooking, or water container, the deposits will release in the food and water. This will cause poisoning in humans and animals.

Is it safe to grow vegetables in galvanized steel?

Yes, it is safe to grow vegetables in galvanized steel. Galvanized steel is safe to use for gardening.

Generally, galvanized steel contains zinc metal. Zinc is a natural constitute of soil. Moreover, zinc is pretty essential for the growth of plants. So, if you grow vegetable plants in the galvanized steel, the zinc in galvanized steel will not do any harm to the plants.

Moreover, if the zinc is released from the container of vegetable plants, it will be helpful. Moreover, zinc has little or no effect on vegetable plants. So, using galvanized steel for growing vegetables is safe".

It almost sounds like a blog that has been translated. Lots of grammatical issues in there.

Here's one that says yes, safe, as most I checked did. Are Galvanized Steel Garden Beds Safe? - Epic Gardening

I have no idea how I missed this thread, fun topic fer shure!! One near and dear to my heart. I'll have to find some pictures of what we've done with the raised beds, our version of a 'hoop tunnel', and hog wire for plant supports.

Please don't let your health issues keep you from one of the most beneficial activities out there. Gardening is food for the body, peace for the soul, and the joy of nature.

I definitely get that, like I said they say it's safe. Many gardeners use them, and they are lovely. I only posted it because I like to learn, and for me personally I try to do everything possible to keep toxins out of my life, so I like to share information as I find it so that others can at least be aware as well.

I keep toxins out by only amending / fertilizing the soil with natural compost.

I wonder if I could adopt some of those designs to foil both frost and my gopher?

I have a gopher problem. Think Caddy Shack level. But I live in town and the critter comes and eats here but does no live on the property which makes it very difficult to dispatch him since we only see him a few times a summer. I can't bait him in to a trap and got one shot at him which went right where I aimed (I found the imbedded shell) but he ducked my slow reaction time of pulling the trigger. He does a lot of damage in a short time. I've tried a few things including snow fencing but it doesn't work. I will probably have to put up a large, ugly, chicken wire fence. Hardly worth in in many ways but I do enjoy the garden
