Made in the USA? Proposed rule clarifies grocery meat labels...

Shoppers could soon find it easier to tell if those grocery store steaks or pork chops were really “Made in the USA.”

Federal agriculture officials on Monday released new requirements that would allow labels on meat, poultry or eggs to use that phrase -- or “Product of USA” -- only if they come from animals “born, raised, slaughtered and processed in the United States.” That’s a sharp change from current policy, which allows voluntary use of such labels on products from animals that have been imported from a foreign country and slaughtered in the U.S., but also on meat that’s been imported and repackaged or further processed.

Imports of beef from countries including Australia, Canada and Brazil, for instance, account for about 12% of the total consumed in the U.S. Overall, imports of red meat and poultry account for less than 6%, while imports of eggs account for less than half of 1%.

Does the government truly believe the average food shopper gives a rats patootie where the ground beef came from? The very first thing I look at is the price, not its point of origin.

Well, you might want to know.

When animal handling has a different set of rules, they can be less than hygienic, fed below grade feed, slaughtered inhumanely, and if actually processed elsewhere, how long ago were they slaughtered. What chemicals were they treated with for preservation?

We bought half a cow last summer. Split it with the SIL, and still have a good supply. We know the farm it was raised on, we know what it was fed, and we know the farmer personally.

Grass Fed beef is a big deal for some people. More nutrients.

Others want to know that fork tender does not mean they got a half dead cow carried to slaughter on a fork lift.

Our beef was fed a combination of grass and grain. Neither one is considered better than the other, but people have the illusion there is a difference.

OK, the 'on a fork lift' visual will stick with me for a while. I think we'll have fish for dinner, lol.

I always assumed it meant US beef born and raised!

Fun Fact: US Cattle Production hit a peak in the 1970's and has been down ever since. No doubt the political driven attacks against the industry have played a part in this and why imported beef is a viable market option.
