Question Why Are Dumbbells Called Dumbbells?

    Why Are Dumbbells Called Dumbbells?

    Dumbbells-1-V2.jpg

Dumbbells are a popular and effective tool for strength training and exercise. They’re versatile, easy to use, and come in various weights and sizes, making them suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels.

You can get a full-body workout with a set of dumbbells or use them as I do: as an accessory to the main barbell lifts. I love doing Arnold shoulder presses and bicep curls with dumbbells.

But while doing some of those curls the other day, I got to wondering: “Why are dumbbells called dumbbells?” I mean, it’s kind of a weird name when you think about it. I decided to investigate.

Interesting. I actually switched all of my free weight exercises to dumb bells. It helps with tendonitis and other joint pain. And for many exercises such as the bench press, you can get a larger range of motion = longer tension time on the chest muscles.

Damn, that article was a crap load of words just to say 'nobody really knows'. After reading said article it's reasonable to believe at least once a day the author hears from a friend or colleague "nothing personal, but SHUT-UP".

I always assumed that it was because dumbbells ring when dropped on a hard surface.

I am not sure about the why of the name, but it does distinguish them from barbells. Why barbells? It is a bar that you add weight to on each side.
