It seems irrelevant to you. It is relevant to people who want this war to end.

Ukraine ceased to exist as a coherent state in 2014. It's nothing more than a shattered rump state.

    Good question.

Why would charging a country's leader with war crimes lead to a forever war? First, now, no matter what Putin must win in the eyes of his countrymen. If he fails he may find himself "turned over" by his political opponents. So we significantly increased our risks as Putin now has something to lose. We also upped the stakes in a negotiated settlement as we undercut Putin's ability to trade "victories" away to settle.

The time to determine if war crimes occurred is after the war has ended.

Apparently, you are happy for it to "end" on Russia's terms.

In other words, by ceding at least some of the land that was, for years, Ukraine--but which Russia has (illegally) seized.

Yep. It really doesn't matter to me so long as the war ends. The US has no vital national interest in the location of Ukraine's eastern border. But we do have a national interest in peace.

In this case they have determined that there’s a case for charges while a conflict is ongoing.

I don’t believe this will impact the length of this conflict one way or other.

Of course you don't. You easily dismiss rational thinking on the matter.

You seem to be suggesting that we should help Putin to win this highly immoral war, just in order to gain "a negotiated settlement."

Is that not what you are implying?
