Americans Pull Back From Values That Once Defined U.S.

Patriotism, religious faith, having children and other priorities that helped define the national character for generations are receding in importance to Americans, a new Wall Street Journal-NORC poll finds. The survey, conducted with NORC at the University of Chicago, a nonpartisan research organization, also finds the country sharply divided by political party over social trends such as the push for racial diversity in businesses and the use of gender-neutral pronouns.

Some 38% of respondents said patriotism was very important to them, and 39% said religion was very important. That was down sharply from when the Journal first asked the question in 1998, when 70% deemed patriotism to be very important, and 62% said so of religion.

Bill McInturff, a pollster who worked on a previous Journal survey that measured these attitudes along with NBC News, said that “these differences are so dramatic, it paints a new and surprising portrait of a changing America.’’ He surmised that “perhaps the toll of our political division, Covid and the lowest economic confidence in decades is having a startling effect on our core values.’’ A number of events have shaken and in some ways fractured the nation since the Journal first asked about unifying values, among them the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the financial crisis of 2008 and subsequent economic downturn and the rise of former President Donald Trump.

A couple of months back I had a drink with a work buddy of mine. Not knowing or caring about his politics, he said something that I though was striking but true. He basically vented his frustration about how it's perceived wrong to love your country here.

And honestly, I wasn't even born here and I find myself to be more patriotic than most people here in NY.

How much of this is because they've flooded the country with people that don't share our values?

You do not view gender fluidity as an individual expression of individual freedom. But that's what it is. You are antifreedom.
You support unbridled deregulation of large corporations causing them to become monopolies. Yet you claim to support free enterprise. Many of you profess to be Christian but you deplore a safety net that saves the least of us from homelessness and starvation.
    You are some un-Americans

As an adult, you can cover yourself with all the gender fluid you want, just stop trying to abuse the children.

So the number of Illegal immigrants each year is about 1 million, that is not counting the legal Immigrants which I am sure is a lower number. So lets say 1.5 million people a year, that is a lot of people

Once upon a time, when you came to the country they tried to assimilate you to the language, culture, History and Constitution. That is now considered Racist by the left, We know that the consequences of not doing this is very detrimental to the immigrant, as they are not as likely to succeed. Which is what the left wants because then they are victims and dependent on the government.

In the past 10 years History being taught to our students went from the USA is the last best hope for freedom in the world and with hard work and effort you can be anything that you want to be, to the USA is a racist hateful nation and you can't do anything because the rich/ white/ pick your adjective at the time have stolen it from you and you deserve free stuff and you should not have to work for it.

So how could people that have been brought up that way thing well of the country.

Anyone that believes this is an accident is crazy, this is a long term plan to change the direction of this country.

The only companies that are approaching Monopoly status are things like Utilities where the government has done away with competition. Any Yes the people that live in those areas are being fleeced by these companies with he full support of the government.

Who else is on your list. If the government is not involved there is always competition

I would guess not so much.

Levels of patriotism have fluctuated in the past--increasing during WWI and WWII but decreasing during the Vietnam
War, only to increase again right after 9/11.

Religious adherence is dropping and that's more consistent, but religion does not necessarily go hand in hand with better values--consider that religious adherence was high in the early-mid 19th Century, but slavery was also popular.

I think about a quarter of all immigrants to the US come from Mexico and South America, which are mostly Christian countries. We also get 10-15% from China/India, so maybe not Christian, but strong family values.

Yes they have flooded the country. What as it? 1.8 million last year? 2.3 million this year? Let's not forget the 1.2 million 'gotaways' as well. This is what I call flooding the country.

    Yes, I have asked them.
