I remember reading the fall of the Byzantine empire actually shaped the Columbus voyage. Firstly, the decision to go west across the Atlantic was made for them, Columbus had no choice. He could not sail east after the Byzantines were overrun.
Secondly, geography, technologies, and maps. Columbus really had no idea what he would find, his search for a new world was mostly blind....he was looking for the Far East. Had Byzantium endured, Columbus might have been known for his Pacific voyage.
