We have a republic. Sometimes called a representative democracy. A pure democracy has no representatives. Citizens vote on everything. Our founders feared that type of government.

They are right on this one, we were not set up to be a Democracy.

    Representative republic.
Call your state legislators and insist they approve the Article V convention of States to propose amendments.

I pledge allegiance to the Constitution as written and understood by this nation's founders, and to the Republic it created, an indivisible union of sovereign States, with liberty and justice for all.

Madison wrote of the differences between a "pure" or "direct" democracy and a republic and of course embraced the republican form of government. However both he and Hamilton saw a republic as a "representative democracy".

When people think of a "democracy" today, they are almost always thinking of a "representative" democracy, which is interchangeable with "republic".

The founders intent is not a bumper sticker and young people need to be educated on these misconceptions. We are not run by the whim of voters or their elected representatives (as in many dictatorships) and understanding these basic principles is important.

I agree, but I also think it is important for young people to be educated in the differences between a "republic" and a "direct" or "pure" democracy. A great way to do that is to use the US as an example of a "representative democracy" and ancient Athens as an example of a "pure" or "direct" democracy. I actually most often refer to that form of government as an "Athenian Democracy".

Agreed. But as you pointed out in an earlier post, people today do know what is meant when the U.S. is referred to as a "democracy". No one, not even young people, think that a pure democracy is being referred to. It's just annoying to me when certain individuals appear to be on a hair trigger to jump up and "correct" anyone - that is, anyone whose ideology or politics they believe is suspect - when that person uses the "d" word.
