To be conservative, then, is to prefer the familiar to the unknown, to prefer the tried to the untried, fact to mystery, the actual to the possible, the limited to the unbounded, the near to the distant, the sufficient to the superabundant, the convenient to the perfect, present laughter to utopian bliss. ― Michael Joseph Oakeshott, Rationalism in Politics and Other Essays
Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire. ― Gustav Mahler

On the outside, trickling down on the Insiders
We won't live free until the Democrats, and their voters, live in fear.
The Sage of Main Street (03-25-2023)
I have posted the dictionary definition and you choose to ignore it or you can't comprehend it and I don't really care which.
What bothers me about the right-wing insistence that it is a republic and not a democracy is that they don't put the word democratic before the word republic. They seem to be making room for a form of government other than a democracy. Their support of a populist want to be dictator gives added weight to that concern.
Trump attempted to end democracy in the United States. I'm sure if he succeeded you would still insist we had a republic.
I will fight and die if necessary to defend democracy.
