Exactly the (largely unspoken) mantra of too many parents. A parent who hates isn't going to want their child to do or think anything other than what they hear at home.
Obviously this is just a song that some kids are going to learn the words to and sing at a music concert and not some sort of formal lesson plan. If a parent has a problem with people of a certain color or sexuality, they shouldn't worry that singing or hearing this song is going to mess up their "home schooling" in that area.
“Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.” - Robert E. Howard
"Only a rank degenerate would drive 1,500 miles across Texas and not eat a chicken fried steak." - Larry McMurtry
Let's keep in mind here that parents are not the problem as they were not involved in the decision. To quote:
"According to the school district, the music teacher checked with the principal to determine if the song would be acceptable to use in a first-grade music concert. The principal then checked with a central office administrator. The two reviewed the song alongside the district's 'Board Policy 2240 - Controversial Issues in the Classroom.' In accordance with the policy, they determined the song 'could be deemed controversial.'"
The problem is schools perhaps being overly cautious in avoiding controversial issues.
The question to ask is why did this ever come about?
Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire. ― Gustav Mahler
