    Theybies

An explosive teaser of this Sunday’s episode of 60 Minutes has clocked up more than four million views on social media. The previewed segment will shed light on an “unprecedented” parenting trend that lets young children choose their own gender.

Known as “theybies” – a portmanteau of the pronoun “they” and the word “baby”, and a concept that’s gained traction since about 2018 – the children are brought up without gender designation from birth, and are referred to by their parents using they/them/their pronouns.

One parent who is raising their child without gender said: “We didn’t assign a gender at birth … We’re not trying to eliminate gender, we’re just really helping kids find their own path to it.”

“I’m letting this little person be who they want to be,” another parent featured in the preview said. “Strangers in the street have had quite a strong response. Why are you so obsessed? Why do you need to know?”

So choosing your gender is like choosing a favorite flavor of ice cream and parents should not get involved with that?

Never mind that the political activist forces in media, entertainment, and the school system are very much involved already.

It's odd to be sure, but probably harmless.

What I got from the video clip is that the group of Australian parents have agreed not to enforce sexual gender norms on their kids.

That may be more difficult than they think.

But, it's interesting. What if you had grown up not being categorized because you were a girl? What if you were allowed to choose your own toys and not be given baby dolls and easy-bake ovens to play with? What if your parents asked you what toy you wanted and you picked a dump truck?

What if you were allowed to grow up without your parents or society pushing you in a specific direction?

I don't know what will happen, but I remember reading about Brad Pitt' and Angelina Jolie's daughter (Shiloh) who identified as a boy when she was young--wearing all boy clothes and cutting her hair like a boy. When hormones kicked in as a teen, it seems she felt more like a girl and now dresses like a girl. I remember Jolie saying she wasn't going to push her in any direction.

It will be interesting to see what happens with this new parenting experiment. While it's not my preferred brand of parenting--I don't oppose it.

It isn't harmless once the gender reassignment drugs are prescribed. That is life changing.

It is very harmful once sex organs are mutilated. Very few are satisfied with that in the long run.

From the trailer, I couldn't tell if they supported or opposed drugs and surgeries. It looked to me more like they were just going to let the kids grow up and find their own interests. Without pushing them in any direction.

I'm opposed to those drugs and surgeries on minors, but I believe in allowing the parents, the child, and their doctors decide.

I am not in favor of it being done on minors even with the parents involved. The vast majority of these cases are just a passing phase.

Confusing innocent children is child abuse. But I'm not surprised you don't think it's a big deal.
