We have a few posters that look at bills like the recent ones proposed in Texas that mandate Bible study time and posting the 10 Commandments in schools as a good way to once again teach ethics to our kids.
What we're seeing (in Texas and in other states) is actually creeping Christian Nationalism. Many didn't know Texas passed another bill last fall that mandated the inclusion of the words, "In God We Trust" in schools along with the American flag and the Texas flag.
Socially partisan folks seem to see these laws--as well as draconian restrictions on women's rights--as something that might be able to return this nation to its post-WWII period where Father Knows Best and Leave it to Beaver reigned supreme.
Back in 2007, Chris Hedges wrote, "American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America." Virtually everything Hedges predicted is taking place.
Hedges talks about the rise of the Christian right in the US and their efforts to establish a theocratic state. He argues that the Christian right has formed a movement that seeks to undermine society and establish a totalitarian regime that would suppress dissent and promote their religious and social agenda.
The book describes the tactics used by the Christian right to gain political power, including deepening their alliance with the Republican Party and the use of propaganda. Hedges also examines the ideology of the Christian right, including their views on homosexuality, abortion, and other social issues. He documents their attempts to infiltrate key institutions of American society, such as the military, law enforcement, and the judiciary. He traces the start of the movement to the cultural and social changes of the 1960s, including the civil rights movement, the sexual revolution, and counterculture.
A good number of Americans think our Founders wanted us to be a Christian Nation. That is mostly a misunderstanding and misinterpretation that's been exposed numerous times in publications such as the chapter, "Birth of Myth," from Green's book on creating a Christian America.
We were all busy with life and most of us didn't see what Hedges saw, but now more are seeing it and warming us. The GOP has been hijacked by Christian nationalists. It's been decades in the planning.
