Three men are facing 116 criminal counts for allegedly using drones to drop cell phones, drugs and other contraband into five state prisons, the Ohio State Highway Patrol and Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction said Wednesday.

The investigation began May 28, 2021 when a drone was intercepted at Toledo Correctional Institution.

Charged in Franklin County Common Pleas Court are Robert A. Faulkner, 33, of Columbus, Cory A. Sutphin, 28, of Grove City, and Charles Gibbs, 33, of Sandusky. They're accused of using drones to make drops at Toledo, Mansfield, Richland, and Ross correctional institutions, and the North Central Correctional Complex.

The indictment included charges of possession and dealing of cocaine and fentanyl, engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, and possession of criminal tools.

I never really thought about it but I wonder how many are delivering drugs this way. They have to find you in possession of the controller to link you to the drugs. But you know if the drone gets stopped to dump the controller.

I know you have to be registered with the FAA if you own a drone.Of course there are ways around that I'm sure.

Drones over X level, yes. The drone that my kids got me for Father's Day a few years ago, no. Nice and fun, but not enough to register.

The twit neighbors that I've talked about before, the ones with all the nasty signage up, ran a drone over our property. The catch is, (at least in TN) you can't see our property from the road, and law says running a drone over something you can't see is illegal. You are not supposed to shoot drones down according to the FAA, but if they can't see the drone, and are functioning by camera on the drone, it's considered illegal and may be shot down.

Unfortunately, we don't carry a shotgun with us in the yard. But now that we know they have done it before, we are a little more prepared. *evil laugh*

The Medina County Sheriff's Department got a drone. I promptly called them and told them that I maintain an expectation of privacy over my property and that if I saw their drone over my property I would shoot it down. They laughed. I said 'No, I'm serious - It's a violation of my 4th Amendment rights.'

Where should we draw the line between the advancement of technology and the protection of personal privacy? For one Kentucky man, his property line is where he gets to make the call, and he made that point of view perfectly clear when he pointed his shotgun at a drone hovering in his backyard and pulled the trigger.

“It was just right there. It was hovering. I would never have shot it if it was flying,” William Merideth said in an interview with Ars Technica. “When he came down with a video camera right over my back deck, that’s not going to work.”

Merideth claims that the drone was first spotted hovering over his neighbor’s house—a claim his neighbor confirms—and he had no intentions of taking any actions against it until it entered onto his own property. Merideth’s 16-year-old daughter was laying out by their pool at the time, and when the drone pilot decided to stop his vehicle and get an electronic eyeful, he decided enough was enough.
