"I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments by those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations." -- James Madison
I’m putting up a greenhouse and one of the raised beds is going to be a bunkbed style aqua/hydroponic combo. The bottom is a 4’x16’x3’ deep tank for raising shrimp. The upper “bed” is a gently sloped lined tray where plants in perforated pots will be placed, with the water from the tank pumped for aeration and transfer of nutrients to the plants. Before returning to the tank, the water will be further cleaned by passing it through a filter with biochar media. The biochar will be changed periodically and used as a component in static pile compost bioreactors to make a special diverse microbiotic soil inoculant that is fungally dominant and very effective at working with plant life to lock up atmospheric carbon while making the soil more productive and water absorbent.
The biochar will be produced from a pyrolysis system, using waste biomass from forest fuels-reduction thinning projects, that burns the co-produced syngas in a boiler to make hot water for heating the shrimp tank and the soil in the other beds in the winter. A Stirling generator is also planned next year to use the abundant hot water for electricity generation. The entire operation will be seriously carbon negative and revenue positive, while creating a cornucopia of associated social, economic, and environmental benefits.
The only downside to the project is that it steals time away from being here, mindlessly bickering with all of my swell friends…
