Question The Hidden Cost of Our Obsession With Fish Oil Pills

The Hidden Cost of Our Obsession With Fish Oil Pills

The market in this prized commodity is worth billions—but are the supposed benefits worth the cost to global ecosystems?

Scanning the shelves and internet for fish oil is a dizzying task. There are dozens of brands available and, although the typical consideration for the popular supplement is that quality matters most, it is not the only factor. These prized products travel a long way before being labelled as “pure” and “fresh” – starting with the industrial-scale grinding down of a tiny fish that is crucial for healthy ocean and food systems.

While some fish oil is made from cod, mackerel or sardines, most comes from Peruvian anchovetas, a type of anchovy. These silvery fish are an important source of nutrition for the wildlife in the Humboldt Current, one of the most productive marine ecosystems on Earth. “We’re extracting millions of tonnes from an ecosystem that depends on that fish. The ecosystem is being impoverished and losing its resilience to big changes brought about by El Niños and climate change,” says Majluf.

“That fish could be used to feed our people. An industry that’s paying almost nothing for that fish is taking it all away.”

It says 'may reduce' ... lots of other ways to do that. I think we bought them once years ago and while mom was big on vitamins, fish oil wasn't a magical elixir way back. All sort of magical solutions, all you need is good marketing and an easily convinced or frightened audience. Interesting stuff below.

Good link, most of which I know and do. However, there are some of us who deal with multiple Autoimmune issues daily, and need as much help as possible with inflammation.

I take Krill oil several times a week, along with a number of anti-inflammatory supplements, eat a fairly healthy diet, but since I'm no saint, I do indulge in the occasional donut, Reeses PB cup or other 'junk'.

    That's too bad.

They make tart cherry gummies now as well (but, that's probably a no go as well).

I took them off a combination pizza and still end up tossing the pizza. I forgot I was in Portuguese territory down in Rhode island.

If you are eating the typical western diet you need to supplement with Omega 3s. Krill is a sustainable source, unlike the fish.
