Then why can’t kids do math or read at grade level?

    They blame that on money.

Modern academia has created a system of producing teachers like the imbecile who’s the subject of this thread. They aren't just in our colleges and universities. They are infiltrated in every level of education.

While our students fall farther and farther behind other nations, the more this system is relieved of all responsibility by people motivated by a political agenda.

Lets see. One reply was "your triggered" then one was "duh" Then you repeated one reply a few times about teachers are lousy now without any evidence but you had quizzed them. When asked you made another inane insult. I believe you went there a few times when nothing intelligent was left for you..........
Then why can’t kids do math or read at grade level?
It is a fair question. Children from upper income families score much better on tests than poor children. Teachers are not the answer there. I can teach children to read and do elem. math. Did it for years. Its easy if you have the patience and skill. Kids that come to school with lots of issues related to poverty and bad home situations are the ones that struggle the most. Throw them in a big 1st grade class and they will fail. Especially when you have other kids that come to school already a year or two ahead with skills because of THEIR PARENTS involvement.

It’s my fault that you are supporting a system which is failing to educate out students and has been for decades.

But as I predicted you think the problem is money and class. Obviously you’ve been part of the problem. Probably still are.

Did you see grinning from ear to ear when she was cuffed and being put into a police car? Then release later due to cashless bail. Does anyone think, in NYC, this woman who put a knife to another person's throat will be prosecuted? I suspect that's why she was grinning.

But how much of the stuff being required targets the original job of schools? Reading, writing and arithmetic with some science and history thrown in.
The level of behavior problems we attempt to handle in mainstream classes has a negative effect on all concerned.
And this is a microcosm of society. Bomb threats, specialist paid to stop bullying who can't even slow it down, protected groups which my definition means unprotected groups, behaviors as you mentioned, parents who are less involved and less supportive, renewed racial divide, gangs, security/metal detectors etc. A divided society means divided schools.
I do not believe in corporal punishment by teachers. But few of us ever needed the paddle in my school. There is more at play than that.
So yes, the job is difficult, yet it comes with enough perks that salary/benefit packages ( at least in some states) compete with many other masters level jobs.

College professors are a different story but my understanding is that most of the sharp increase in the cost of higher education has gone to administrative pursuits vs to teach more students etc.

Today it’s pretty clear that the best and brightest are not going into the teaching profession. It’s often something people choose to do because it’s one of the easier majors in college. It doesn’t take a great deal of effort as compared to many other fields of study.

Many teachers today would be considered unqualified in the past.
In high school the students who claimed they wanted to be teachers were, for the most part, C students (no hate here- I was a C student in every class that didn't interest me).

    Money can’t be the issue.
