    Surviving the Amazon

I've always enjoyed reading about the adventures of the early European explorers and conquistadors. It's amazing what these men were willing to endure for fame and fortune. It's also incredible how wily and resourceful they could be. This is about a failed expedition in the early 1540s led by the one of the Pizzaro brothers. They set out from Peru into the interior of the Amazon looking for El Dorado. They wind up exhausted and starving when the second in command, Francisco Orellana, proposes taking some of the men downriver in search of food...

Whoever criticizes capitalism, while approving immigration, whose working class is its first victim, had better shut up. Whoever criticizes immigration, while remaining silent about capitalism, should do the same.

Are you suggesting this was not a picnic for White People?

I dismiss the armchair moralizing of smug progressives. I admire their fortitude and resolve. These guys were the astronauts of the 16th Century. I enjoy these accounts.

That said, some of them were vicious men. Cortes, IMO, was a gentleman and a savvy politician but the Pizzaro brothers were illiterate thugs.

A British guy, Ed Stafford walked the damn Amazon within around 2008-10. The dangers are largely the same, if I remember correctly infection and even jock itch was a probelm

Ed Stafford knew where he was and where he was going. Since he brought technology that allowed him to send live updates, help knew where he was too.
