It was about 1971 and I was in a high school class that I think was called "Visual Arts". Our assignments consisted of writing and producing videos of various types. This was back in the day when a videotape recorder was the size of a large suitcase.
I remember one of the assignments was to script and produce a video of yourself reciting a poem, and I had fun with that, doing a sort of '50s beatnik scene and me, all dressed in black, sitting on a trash can reciting Lawrence Ferlinghetti's 'Junkman's Obligato'. Another time we had to create a commercial, and I remember doing a takeoff on Artie Johnson's 'Laugh-In' foreign man character, advertising a brand of Polish vodka.
One of my classmates, who happened to be the School District Superintendent's son, recorded a commercial for a lip balm, and I'll never forget the last line in the commercial was, "It comes in two flavors - seafood green and $#@! pink". We all thought that was pretty funny, including our female teacher, who was pretty cool, but he had to do the commercial again with a slightly different ending. So he recorded it again, but read it exactly the same way the second time; then the screen goes black and you hear him say, "Oh man, I forgot!" Which in a way was even funnier. Then I guess our teacher forgot about it.
Later a group of school officials, including our classmate's Superintendent dad, came to the "studio" - yeah, we had a real studio - during a school open house, and in addition to watching us film some things, the teacher played some of the tapes we'd made earlier. You can probably figure out the rest of the story yourselves.![]()
