On the drive to work on my cabin this morning, I heard a presentation by Dave Foreman with a theme about preserving wilderness - the specific subject was the Gila Wilderness, the first designated wilderness in American history. My cabin is located just one mile from the Gila Wilderness boundary. One bit of Dave's speech really resonated with me where he put mankind's presence since the Cambrian period, when life as we know it began to evolve 540 million years ago. He compares it to a book, 540 pages long, with each page representing a million years. If each page has 200 words, and each word has (I didn't catch how many characters), the the existence of humanity on the planet is represented by the period after the last word on the 540th page.Yet here we are - 8 billion strong, having changed the face of the planet in unimaginable ways and heating the atmosphere and oceans mindlessly, polluting everywhere... and breeding like $#@!roaches. What can I say, humans are bizarre. I hope this life is an illusion.
