They are trying to copy the MSA and other lawsuits/settlements against big tobacco. There was, however, real, definable loss for the states in the case of tobacco and real deceit in those cases. For example, as late as 1998 a tobacco exec claimed in a congressional hearing that there was no proof nicotine was addictive. More importantly they designed cigarettes to make them even more addictive. Big oil is a lot of things, but they did not design gasoline to be more destructive.

The price of gas is high because CA taxes it at both ends.
Naw, the state isn't responsible for the actual cost of gas, therefore the taxes applied wouldn't cause an increase.............that's the producers' fault that Newsome is collecting about 1.50 on each gallon sold.

It's a global market I keep trying to explain but you folks are dense. As long as we participate in a global market which we will do as long as the oil companies are extant we will be subject to price fluctuations brought about by opec's actions.
