How Central Park Was Created Entirely By Design and Not By Nature

How Central Park Was Created Entirely By Design and Not By Nature

Here is a link to a walking tour of Central Park. Very interesting.

Today Michael Wyetzner of Michielli + Wyetzner Architects joins AD in New York for an in-depth walking tour of Central Park. Everything in Central Park got there by considered choice, not by nature, and the park as we know it today is the result of a design competition held in the 1850s. From hidden through-roads to its calming bodies of water, join Michael as he walks you through why Central Park is the best-designed city park in the world.

It always concerned me that the area is so flat and level, not like a natural park.

I'd go crazy in the concrete canyons of the big city.I'd have to have a patch of woods for an escape. I hear the apartments facing the park go for big bucks. 1 Bed,1 bath condo goes for $15000 a month on 5th Av.

Me too. Winter time with snow. Pretty. The horses they use for carriage rides were treated poorly though.

I have a copy of his travel diary on his trip through the South to Texas in the 1850's. He was a noted abolitionist, but he also pointed out how badly Irish and German laborers were treated in the South, particularly those working on the levees and riverboats around New Orleans, which explained a lot about why the South attracted so few white immigrants and ultimately lost the Civil War.
