You're right that the Holocaust had not officially begun but at the time of the voyage, May 1939, it was already several months after Kristallnacht. By that time, the anti-Jewish policies of the Nazi regime were well-established, and Jews were increasingly targeted and persecuted.

Because, statistically speaking, those of Jewish ancestry are highly intelligent, they win a large number of Nobel prizes in the sciences, they regularly contribute to new medical and educational progress. They're high achievers.
We keep hearing how we can't have people south of the border migrate here because they're lazy and not educated -- they don't pay their fair share in taxes. There are no such complaints about Jews. They're over-qualified. They're dedicated. They have incredible work ethics.
They would improve -- not detract -- from any community they join.
