"My religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble minds. That deeply emotional conviction of the presence of a superior reasoning power, which is revealed in the incomprehensible universe, forms my idea of God."

"In view of such harmony in the cosmos which I, with my limited human mind, am able to recognise, there are yet people who say there is no God. But what makes me really angry is that they quote me for support of such views."

And my favorite from Albert Magnus:

"I’m not an atheist and I don’t think I can call myself a pantheist. We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library filled with books in many different languages. The child knows someone must have written those books. It doe s not know how. The child dimly suspects a mysterious order in the arrangement of the books but doesn’t know what it is. That, it seems to me, is the attitude of even the most intelligent human being toward God."

It’s curious that at more than 140 pages in, agreement with the OP is quietly - almost magically - appearing with post #1.

Even more curious is that LWW is now claiming the concept expressed in post #1 to have originated with him, and he has been struggling all along to get folks (myself included, to all appearances) to understand and agree with him!

What sort of mad sorcery must this be?

I think God is unknowable, not to be understood by humans.

What would our lives be like if there were no rancorous arguments about what God is or wants? No hostility or competition or hurt feelings connected to unprovable beliefs?

That could be the solution for what ails humanity - to live simply, and simply live.

    Peace.
You can't solve a problem until you understand what the problem is...

It is entirely possible that there is a God, or that the Universe was created by some powerful entity that created it and then ceased to exist. The existence of the Christian Trinity as described in the Nicene Creed, however, is clearly far less probable.

The attitude of religious people has always been to state, "This is the truth and you should believe it" and then some of them attempt to find rational explanations for why it is true.

In Vacation Bible School, we were told that Adam was created by God who extracted a rib from Adam and turned it into Eve, and that, said the Vacation Bible School teacher, is why men have one less rib than women. This resulted in some students counting their ribs and others counting the ribs of others, and ended in a ticklefest and no conclusions drawn.

The attitude of the scientist is to attempt to reach the most logical hypothesis, and then from that formulate a Theory, which is the most likely conclusion. Then other scientists attempt to poke holes in the Theory. When it cannot be done, then it is called a Law. The Gas Laws, the Law of Gravity, and such are examples. But no worthy scientist ever concludes that there can be no exception to the Theories or Laws. It is always possible that under some circumstance, the Theory or Law can still be inaccurate.

That is why I am an agnostic. There is insufficient proof for the existence of a God, and insufficient proof for the non existence of a God as well.

But the Christian Trinity seems to have far less going for it as a possibility. Think of the difference in risk between buying shares in Microsoft to those of winning the SuperBall.

Character. Which has nothing to do with religion.
